Frequently Asked Questions
What is Therapy?
Therapy is a collaborative, confidential space to explore what’s keeping you stuck, make sense of your experiences, and build a more compassionate relationship with yourself and others.
I work with individuals and couples using Internal Family Systems (IFS), Hakomi Somatic Mindfulness, and a trauma-informed lens as well as EMDR, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman, Developmental model and Attachment theory — approaches that honor the connection between mind, body, and lived experience. Together, we’ll work toward greater clarity, healing, and ease.
What is sex therapy?
Sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy that addresses sexual concerns, intimacy challenges, and relationship issues. It does not involve physical touch or sexual activity — sessions are conducted through conversation, just like any other therapy.
During sex therapy sessions, the therapist creates a safe and non-judgmental environment for clients to discuss their concerns openly. They may employ various therapeutic techniques and approaches, such as talk therapy, mindfulness practices, or psychoeducation, depending on the client’s needs and goals.
Sex therapy sessions can be conducted individually or with partners, and they typically involve a combination of discussions, exercises, homework assignments, and interventions aimed at addressing specific challenges and promoting positive changes in sexual well-being.
It’s important to note that sex therapy is a confidential process, and therapists adhere to ethical guidelines to ensure client privacy and safety. The ultimate goal of sex therapy is to empower individuals and couples to overcome sexual difficulties, enhance their sexual satisfaction and overall well-being, and foster healthier and more fulfilling sexual relationships.
What does an AASECT-certified sex therapist mean?
AASECT certification means a therapist has completed 150+ hours of specialized sex therapy training, supervised clinical experience, and ongoing education through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists — the gold standard credential in the field.
Is sex therapy right for me?
Sex therapy can help with a wide range of concerns including low libido, desire discrepancy between partners, sexual pain, difficulty with orgasm, intimacy issues, sexual trauma recovery, and exploring sexual identity. If you’re unsure, reach out for a free consultation.
Do I need to be in a relationship to have sex therapy?
Not at all! It is best to learn more about yourself before you connect with another person around your sexuality.
What if I haven’t had sex with anyone or with my partner, is Sex Therapy still a good option?
Yes! We will work through those barriers together and learn more about how to support you and your partner.
What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
I am a licensed therapist in the state of California – meaning I have a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and have taken the requirements to earn my licensure. I keep up with licensure ethics and laws. In addition, I have a coaching business to support those residing outside of California. This allows me to use my clinical skills anywhere in the world.
Do you take insurance?
I am a private-pay therapist. I do not bill insurance directly, but I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Please contact me to discuss fees.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. I offer HIPAA-compliant telehealth sex therapy to clients throughout California, in addition to in-person sessions at my Castro district office in San Francisco.
How should I prepare for our time together?
Find a quiet spot where you will not be disturbed for our time together. If you have roommates or live with others, it could be best to wear headphones. Take some breathes and allow yourself time to get to session.
What’s your cancellation policy?
I have a 48 hour cancellation policy. I always offer one freebie, however after that I will charge the full amount for our session if not canceled within that time frame. Of course, there will be an emergency, for that I always ask that you give me more details, so I know how to support you.
Q: Where is your office located?
My office is located at 4053 18th St in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood, easily accessible by Muni and close to Noe Valley and the Mission. Street parking is available on nearby streets. For clients who prefer not to commute, I offer HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions throughout California.
